Increasing your hook-ups
One of the biggest mistakes I find with anglers that are new to salt water fly fishing is not maintaining direct contact between their rod tip and fly.  Marine game fish often strike with deadly accuracy and lightning speed.  Every inch of slack from your rod top to your fly decreases your odds of successful hook-up.

There are two angler oriented mistakes that can be simply corrected.  They are:  keeping your fishing rod tip pointed to the water and setting the hook by stripping the line with the rod still in the same position before you lift the rod.  Although these tasks seem easy enough, a fly rodder with a long history of natural drifting an Adams to a brown trout will out of instinct let his rod tip drift up from the water and lift his rod to set the hook.  In both instances they will create enough slack to miss an opportunity to connect with their quarry.  Remember, practice makes perfect.

The other mistakes any new saltwater fly angler makes is not choosing the correct fly line and matching leader .... but that's another story.

Good fishing and successful catching!
